Lackey named Game 4 NLDS starter

Scott Rovak / USA TODAY Sports

The St. Louis Cardinals are turning to John Lackey on short rest in an attempt to keep their World Series hopes alive.

The veteran right-hander will pitch on three days' rest in Game 4 of the NLDS on Tuesday versus the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, manager Mike Matheny announced following Monday's 8-6 loss in Game 3.

Lackey allowed only two hits over 7 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win in the series opener, and boasts an 8-5 record with a 2.90 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 22 career postseason appearances.

The Cubs, who have a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series, will send right-hander Jason Hammel to the hill to oppose Lackey.
