Blue Jays' Price could start potential Game 4 on short rest

Though David Price's postseason woes didn't relent in Game 1 of the ALDS, wherein he allowed five runs in seven innings en route to a 5-3 loss, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said the former Cy Young Award winner is a candidate to start Game 4 against the Texas Rangers on short rest.

If necessary, that is.

"Well, we've got to worry about tomorrow first but of course that’s always a possibility," Gibbons told the Canadian Press on Saturday. "We know we could do anything we wanted really. But not too wise to get that far ahead."

Price, now the first pitcher in history to lose his first six career postseason starts, struggled to locate his pitches in Thursday's series-opening defeat, walking two and surrendering a pair of homers in Toronto's first playoff game since 1993.

"It's frustrating, yes," Price said Thursday. "I hold myself in extremely high regard. I know my teammates do as well, and across the country in Canada, and I didn't throw the ball well today. I'll be ready to go my next start."

Though he has only pitched on three-days' rest once before in his career, Price - who crafted a 2.30 ERA in 11 regular-season starts for the Blue Jays - may be asked to do just that Monday if the Blue Jays, down 2-0 in the ALDS, can eke out a victory Sunday at Globe Life Park.
