Davis' walk-off HR helps Orioles end slide

Things haven't been going particularly well for the Baltimore Orioles, but their luck might have just changed.

Baltimore came from behind to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday 7-6 in 11 innings thanks to home runs from Jonathan Schoop and Chris Davis.

Tampa carried a two-run lead into the ninth inning, and it seemed as if the Orioles were on their way to a seventh consecutive loss. Then Schoop hit a two-run homer off Rays closer Brad Boxberger to keep things alive.

Davis stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 11th and crushed his second home run of the game into the right-field stands to give the Orioles a much-needed win and earn an unusual celebratory shower from his teammates.

It was the fourth walk-off home run of Davis' career and his second of the season and he became the fourth player in the last decade to hit a walk off on a 3-0 pitch.

"Yeah we've been fighting and clawing and I feel like every time we get up, we turn around and get back down. Just about everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. Some of it is self-inflicted, some of it is not," Davis told reporters. "We're scratching and clawing, trying to get a win. That was a big one for us."

After a rocky 2014, Davis has turned things around, although it's highly unlikely he'll replicate his numbers from 2013.

Season AVG OBP SLG HR RBI
2013 .286 .370 .634 53 138
2014 .196 .300 .404 26 72
2015 .249 .335 .523 36 94

Prior to the contest, the Orioles were in the midst of a 1-9 stretch, losing 12 of 13. They've dropped into a tough spot in the American League wild-card race and even further out of contention in the AL East pennant race.

The Orioles don't exactly have an easy schedule coming up either: Their next nine games come against the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Kansas City Royals.
