In a match-up between two of the National League's top pitchers on Tuesday, Zack Greinke reigned supreme.

Greinke outpitched Madison Bumgarner to help the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the San Francisco Giants 2-1.

The 31-year-old Greinke left the contest after pitching 7 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out five, leaving his season ERA at 1.59, ranking him fourth in the expansion era behind Bob Gibson, Dwight Gooden and Greg Maddux.

Player Year  ERA
Bob Gibson 1968 1.12
Dwight Gooden 1985 1.53
Greg Maddux 1994 1.56
Zack Greinke 2015 1.59

Bumgarner pitched well in a Giants loss that featured the ejections of manager Bruce Bochy and pitcher Jake Peavy, tossing seven innings of eight-hit ball with eight strikeouts, becoming the first pitcher in MLB history to hit five home runs and strike out 200 batters in a season.

His major mistake came courtesy of a seventh inning offering to Joc Pederson, which the youngster took yard.

Pederson joined Washington Nationals superstar Bryce Harper as the only two left-handed hitters to belt a home run off Bumgarner this season.

Greinke improved to 7-0 in his career against the Giants, which makes him the fifth player in history to win his first seven decisions against San Francisco.

With the victory, the Dodgers extended their lead over the Giants in the National League West to 5 1/2 games.
