Stanton doubtful for Friday return after making rehab start

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Giancarlo Stanton may have to wait even longer than expected to make his return to the majors.

The Miami Marlins slugger took part in his first rehab start with Class-A Advanced Jupiter on Tuesday, and things didn't go according to plan. Stanton went 0-for-2 with a walk and wasn't feeling "100 percent."

"It just didn't feel fully how it should," Stanton told reporters.

The 25-year-old slugger, who broke the hamate bone in his hand on June 26, was on track to return to the Marlins' lineup Friday against the New York Mets.

That may no longer be a possibility based on his progress, but also considering the Marlins are unlikely to rush their franchise player back to action with the team in the midst of a 54-79 season.

Stanton is hitting .265/.346/.952 with 27 home runs and 67 RBIs.
