Cubs designate Soriano, Russell for assignment

The flurry of moves surrounding September call-ups meant some players would likely lose their roster spots, and that's exactly what happened Tuesday.

The Chicago Cubs announced they've designated left-handed pitcher James Russell and right-hander Rafael Soriano for assignment.

Soriano was first activated from the 15-day disabled list before his DFA, having spent time there with right shoulder inflammation. Russell was designated to make room on the 40-man roster for call-ups Quintin Berry and Trevor Cahill.

The 35-year-old Soriano signed with the Cubs as a free agent in June, but the former closer wasn't as effective as the team had hoped, posting a 6.35 ERA in six appearances.

Russell made 49 appearances for the Cubs, but his ERA ballooned to a career-worst 5.29, while his strikeouts per nine innings dropped to a career-low 5.3.
