Ackley, Bailey among Yankees' September call-ups

Chasing the Toronto Blue Jays for their first division title since 2012, the New York Yankees welcomed eight faces, some old and some new, to their clubhouse Tuesday when rosters expanded.

Dustin Ackley, the utilityman acquired from the Seattle Mariners ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, and former All-Star reliever Andrew Bailey are among the most prominent of the group, which also includes Caleb Cotham, Rico Noel, James Pazos, Jose Pirela, Rob Refsnyder, and Austin Romine.

Ackley, the second overall pick in 2009, hit just .215/.270/.366 with six homers in 85 games with Seattle before getting traded, and appeared in just two games for the Yankees before being sent to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barres.

Bailey's career, meanwhile, has been derailed by persistent injury problems, as the two-time All-Star and former Rookie of the Year hasn't pitched in the majors since 2013. After missing all of the 2014 campaign due to setbacks from shoulder surgery, the 31-year-old rebounded nicely this summer, posting a 1.80 ERA with 42 strikeouts in 35 innings between several minor-league affiliates.

Pirela, Refsnyder, and Cotham all spent a bit of time with the Yankees earlier this season, too, while Romine hasn't taken the field for New York since last September. Neither Noel or Pazos have appeared in an MLB game.
