Brewers shut down Garza for remainder of season

The Milwaukee Brewers have shut down right-hander Matt Garza for the remainder of the season after he failed to make it out of the fifth inning Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds.

"This is by far my toughest season. It's not any way I pictured myself going into the season with all the hard work," a livid Garza said following the outing.

Garza revealed he had no say in the matter and that manager Craig Counsell decided to shut him down earlier this week. General manager Doug Melvin offered the veteran the chance to pitch out of the bullpen, but he declined.

Garza will make $12.5 million in each of the next two seasons, and has a $13-million vesting option for the 2018 campaign.

The 31-year-old posted a 6-14 record with a 5.63 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 24 starts.
