Orioles' Gonzalez to undergo MRIs on elbow and shoulder Tuesday

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Baltimore Orioles, coming off Monday's loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, will hope for a better result Tuesday when right-hander Miguel Gonzalez undergoes MRIs on his right elbow and shoulder.

Gonzalez received a cortisone shot in his shoulder Monday and is experiencing swelling in his elbow.

"It was bothering me a little bit, my shoulder," Gonzalez told Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun. "And I guess I was protecting my shoulder and I was using more and more of my elbow and then my elbow swelled. So that's why they want to give me a couple more days to see how it goes."

The 31-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery in 2009, and hopes to avoid revisiting that process.

"I had Tommy John six years ago and I know what it takes, the process and all that," he said. "Hopefully, we don't have to do anything like that. Hopefully it is minor and just rehab it, work hard and move on."

Gonzalez will receive a few days off to rest and is currently scheduled to miss his next start this weekend against the Toronto Blue Jays.
