WASHINGTON - Denard Span expects his recovery from hip surgery will take 4-6 months, meaning he may have played his last game with the Washington Nationals.

Span, 31, will be a free agent this offseason. He will undergo a procedure to repair a torn labrum in his left hip on Tuesday.

The center fielder and leadoff man has hit .292 with 207 runs scored and 106 RBIs since joining Washington from Minnesota in a trade before the 2013 season.

Washington placed Span on the disabled list for a third this season on Friday, retroactive to Thursday.

He previous missed 52 games over two DL stints for abdominal and back ailments. Span said he now believes those injuries were connected to his more serious hip issue.
