Report: Kimbrel claimed on waivers, Padres have 'no intention of moving him'

Jerry Lai / USA TODAY Sports

San Diego Padres closer Craig Kimbrel has been claimed on waivers by an unknown team, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

However, with the August 31 waiver trade deadline approaching, a Padres official told Rosenthal the team has "no intention of moving" the All-Star reliever.

Kimbrel is owed $24 million over the next two seasons, with a $13-million club option for 2018.

The New York Yankees are known to be interested in Kimbrel's services, and there is also loose speculation that the San Francisco Giants may have claimed him to block their division rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers, from doing the same.
