Gallo returns to Rangers for stretch run
The Texas Rangers are bringing back power-hitting prospect Joey Gallo in their bid to make the playoffs for the first time in three seasons.
With rosters expanding, the Rangers promoted Gallo and four others from Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday in a series of moves that included reinstating Josh Hamilton from the disabled list.
Gallo, 21, performed inconsistently during his initial stint in the majors earlier this season, smacking a pair of home runs in his first two games before managing just six hits in his final 36 plate appearances. The club's top prospect returns to a .218/.306/.448 batting line with five homers in 25 games.
The Rangers also recalled pitchers Alex Claudio and Luke Jackson, while purchasing the contracts of right-hander Ross Ohlendorf and outfielder Drew Stubbs from Round Rock.
Texas entered play Tuesday leading the second wild-card spot by one game over the Minnesota Twins.
