Mets get former closer Addison Reed from D-Backs

The New York Mets bolstered their bullpen Sunday by announcing the acquisition of Addison Reed from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In exchange for Reed, the Mets will send a pair of minor leaguers to Arizona, 24-year-old right-hander Matt Koch and 23-year-old right-hander Miller Diaz.

Right-hander Logan Verrett was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas to make room on the 25-man roster for Reed.

Despite grabbing a comfortable lead atop the National League East in recent weeks, the Mets' relief corps has been inconsistent of late, posting a 4.25 ERA while surrendering 1.11 home runs per nine innings over the past two weeks.

On Friday, the club's bullpen surrendered six earned runs over four frames in a 6-4, extra-innings loss to the Boston Red Sox, compelling manager Terry Collins to use Bartolo Colon in relief for the first time since 2011 in Saturday's 3-1 defeat.

Reed, meanwhile, was placed on revocable trade waivers earlier this month, passing through unclaimed after posting a 4.20 ERA with a career-worst 18.8 percent strikeout rate in 38 appearances for the Diamondbacks, who acquired him from the Chicago White Sox in December of 2013. The 26-year-old collected 101 saves from 2012-14, though, and ranked 10th among qualified NL relievers last season with a 4.60 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Reed, who earned roughly $4.88 million this season, remains under team control through the 2017 campaign.
