Giants place Cain on DL with elbow nerve irritation

The San Francisco Giants have placed right-hander Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list with elbow nerve irritation.

Pitcher Chris Heston will be recalled from Triple-A to make Cain's start on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cain has struggled in 10 starts, posting a career-worst ERA of 6.15 and WHIP of 1.58.

The 30-year-old was a major part of the Giants' rotation before undergoing surgery on his throwing elbow and right ankle last season.

Cain also hit the DL earlier this year with a flexor tendon strain in his right forearm.

He's in the midst of a five-year contract worth a guaranteed $112.5 million.
