Miami Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez, who has been out of action since the beginning of August with a right biceps strain, is opening some eyes as he inches closer to a return.

Manager Dan Jennings told reporters Fernandez had a "wow" workout in his latest bullpen session Thursday.

Miami is hopeful their ace can rejoin the rotation by mid-September, and Fernandez said in early-August that if all goes well, nothing is going to hold him back from a return to the Marlins, who currently sit fourth in the National League East with a 51-76 record.

"As long as I'm healthy I'm coming back. It doesn't matter our record," he said.

The former first-round pick began the season on the 60-day disabled list recovering from Tommy John surgery. He made his season debut on July 2.

Fernandez was 4-0 with a 2.30 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 11.1 strikeouts per nine innings prior to the injury.
