Pedroia expected to return to Red Sox next week

Good news, Boston Red Sox fans.

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia is expected to return to the team's lineup next week.

"Dustin is hitting all his check points aggressively," interim manager Torey Lovullo told reporters. "It's getting close for him and we're all in it with him. We're all excited by what we're seeing and what we're hearing. He's putting on spikes. He's aggressively running the bases."

The 32-year-old has been dealing with a right hamstring injury since late June, which he re-aggravated on July 22. The injury has forced the former American League MVP to make two trips to the disabled list.

Lovullo expects Pedroia to be ready to play by Thursday, just in time for their series against the Tampa Bay Rays.

"It's going to be very close to that date," Lovullo said. "Maybe a day or two before, or a day or two after. We're not exactly quite sure on when that return date will fall."

Pedroia has appeared in just six games since injuring his hamstring on June 24, but has been effective when in the lineup, hitting .287/.348/.426 with nine home runs and 34 RBIs.
