Royals add Wandy Rodriguez, Joba Chamberlain on minor-league deals

Jim Cowsert / USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Royals added some veteran depth Sunday, agreeing to terms with Wandy Rodriguez and Joba Chamberlain on minor-league contracts.

Rodriguez started 15 games this season for the Texas Rangers, going 6-4 with a 4.90 ERA in 86 1/3 innings. The 36-year-old lefty was released Aug. 4.

The Royals also brought in Chamberlain, who came out of the Detroit Tigers' bullpen 30 times this season where he struggled to a 4.09 ERA in 22 innings.

The 29-year-old signed a minor-league deal with the Toronto Blue Jays on July 21 after his release from the Tigers, potentially providing the Blue Jays with a veteran arm out of the bullpen.

But with the acquisition of LaTroy Hawkins in the Troy Tulowitzki deal, plus the addition of Mark Lowe at the trade deadline, the bullpen corps was solidified, and Chamberlain opted out of his contract.
