Indians' Carrasco picks up no-decision despite allowing 1 hit over 9 shutout innings

The Cleveland Indians offense wasn't doing their starter a whole lot of favors on Tuesday.

Carlos Carrasco picked up the no-decision despite posting nine scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Angels, in which the right-hander allowed just one hit and a walk to go with seven strikeouts.

Manager Terry Francona opted to go to his bullpen to start the tenth tied 0-0, allowing Carrasco to become the first pitcher to throw nine scoreless innings while allowing one hit or fewer in a no-decision since New York Mets right-hander Matt Harvey in 2013.

"Tonight he established a really good fastball early, and the breaking ball he threw off of that had some really good depth to it," Francona said. "He was economical with his pitches so he could stay out there. He pitched his tail his off, and it was impressive. It was fun to watch."

It's the second-straight sublime outing for the 28-year-old Venezuelan. Carrasco allowed one run on two hits in nine innings against the Oakland Athletics last week while once again striking out seven.

Carrasco didn't allow a baserunner Tuesday until walking Mike Trout in the fourth inning - breaking up a string of 27 consecutive outs. The only hit surrendered was to former teammate David Murphy to lead off the fifth.

The back-to-back dominant performances anoints Carrasco as the first American League starter to throw nine innings and allow two or fewer hits in consecutive starts since Bobby Witt in 1994, according to ESPN. Carrasco also tied a club record with back-to-back starts with at least nine innings pitched and allowing no more than two hits.

Cleveland would go on to win 2-0 after Giovanny Urshela hit a two-run home run in the 12th inning to hand Los Angeles its seventh loss in eight games.

Carrasco entered the outing having gone 2-2 with a 3.72 ERA over his last six starts.
