Mets acquire reliever O'Flaherty from Athletics

The New York Mets acquired left-hander Eric O'Flaherty and cash from the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday in exchange for a player to be named later.

O'Flaherty was designated for assignment Saturday after posting a 5.91 ERA and 1.96 WHIP across 21 1/3 innings this season. The 30-year-old owns a 2.99 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 360 2/3 career innings while holding left-handed hitters to a .201/.266/.263 slash line.

"Given the way this club has played, we want to make sure we're in position to win as many games as we can," assistant general manager John Ricco told reporters of the reasoning behind the deal.

The Mets designated left-handed reliever Alex Torres for assignment in a corresponding move. The 27-year-old owns a 3.15 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings.

It's the second time the two teams have swung a deal over the past week. The Mets acquired reliever Tyler Clippard for minor-leaguer Casey Meisner prior to the non-waiver trade deadline.
