In the southeastern United States, Adonis is a minor-league veteran who played the role of unlikely hero for the Atlanta Braves on Monday night.

Adonis Garcia, a Cuban infielder who appeared in more than 600 minor-league games before making his MLB debut earlier this season, came to the plate in the bottom of the 12th with his team trailing the San Francisco Giants by one run.

Facing veteran right-hander Ryan Vogelsong, the 30-year-old journeyman enjoyed the finest moment of his brief career in the majors, launching a two-run homer to right-center field that sent the Braves to a 9-8 victory in walkoff fashion.

Heading into Monday's series opener at Turner Field, Garcia had just 11 games of big-league experience, hitting .219/.265/.469 with a pair of home runs during his brief stint with Atlanta.
