Angels' Wilson to get 2nd opinion on elbow: 'A Hail Mary at this point'

C.J. Wilson's season may not be finished, but his chances of pitching again this year are slim.

Wilson is considering season-ending surgery on his left elbow after eight bone spurs were discovered in his pitching arm. The Angels starter will get a second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Aug. 11, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.

Wilson says the Angels have brought up the possibility of taking time off or delaying the surgery and and asked him to consider helping out of the bullpen in September.

"I'm working out and staying in shape, just in case they come up with some other magical course of action," Wilson said. "But it seems more like a Hail Mary at this point. I want to pitch - that's why I've pitched this whole time."

A number of Wilson's teammates were reportedly frustrated with the hurler when they found out he was going to shut himself down for the season, with the team in the midst of a playoff race.

Manager Mike Scioscia is going to let the doctors dictate the left-hander's path. Wilson has a history of elbow issues.

"This is going to be driven by the medical staff," Scioscia said. "Whatever decision the medical staff makes, with the doctors, with C.J., is really the direction that this will go. It has nothing to do with what our preference is. It's about, and always will be about, the health of the player."

Wilson is earning $18 million this season and is owed $20 million next season in the final year of a five-year, $77.5-million contract he signed in December 2011.
