Luis Severino's time has come.

The New York Yankees' top pitching prospect will make his major-league debut Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox.

Manager Joe Girardi announced the decision prior to the team's game against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

"There are no guarantees, but I saw his personality in spring training and the way he handled himself, and his professionalism," Girardi told reporters. "I didn't think that he had fear and he wasn't overwhelmed in spring training like I've seen some of the pitchers.

"The first time they're there, it takes them a year, and then the next time you see them pitch well. That was not the case with him. He didn't have any of that, so that makes you think that he'll be able to handle it."

The youngster was a focal point of Yankees trade rumors leading up to the trade deadline, but general manager Brian Cashman would not part with his prized prospect.

"I'm doubling down on what we've got in the farm system," Cashman said Friday, according to ESPN's Wallace Matthews. "(Severino) moved really fast through the system and obviously had a lot of success. So we'll see what the next step for this youngster is. He's somebody we're excited about."

Severino, 21, has been filthy in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He boasts a 7-0 record, an ERA of 1.91, and a 0.92 WHIP in 11 starts.
