Marlins' Alvarez out for season after shoulder surgery

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Miami Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Alvarez, 25, has been sidelined since May with shoulder issues and went under the knife of Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday in Florida to repair a tear.

The right-hander was placed on the disabled list May 23 for the second time this season after making only four starts for the Marlins, failing to win a game while posting a career-worst 6.45 ERA in 22.1 innings of work.
