Rangers' Beltre still can't grip bat: 'What can I do, get a disposable thumb?'

Tim Heitman / USA TODAY Sports

A frustrated Adrian Beltre isn't progressing as quickly as expected from a sprained right thumb.

The Texas Rangers third baseman was initially expected to miss at least two weeks after suffering the injury while sliding into second base May 31. While he's had the stitches removed, Beltre has yet to be able to grip a bat due to the discomfort.

"I've tried every day," Beltre told Jeff Wilson of the Star Telegram. "It's not as close as I want it. I'm not happy, but what can I do, get a disposable thumb?"

The Rangers have gone 10-6 during Beltre's absence, with his replacement, Joey Gallo, helping to pace the offense. The organization's top prospect is hitting .241/.339/.537 with five home runs and 10 RBIs through 15 games. The 21-year-old has, however, struck out 23 times.
