Jose Abreu to undergo X-rays on swollen finger, considered day-to-day

Chicago White Sox slugger Jose Abreu left Friday's contest with the Houston Astros in the bottom of the ninth inning due to irritation in his right index finger.

Abreu, whose finger swelled following the game, said he's optimistic the injury isn't serious, but still expected to undergo an X-ray to determine the extent of the damage. He was not in the White Sox lineup Saturday.

"(Abreu) doesn't feel it's broken or anything," manager Robin Ventura told reporters after Chicago's 6-3 win Friday. "Just bruised."

The 2014 American League Rookie of the Year suffered the injury last week in a game against the Cleveland Indians, but didn't miss any significant time. It was clearly affecting him Friday, however, causing the White Sox first baseman to make a costly throwing error during the sixth inning.

"It was like two weeks ago when I was in the cage in Chicago. The situation was getting worse, and today I couldn't continue playing," Abreu said. "That was the right choice, not just for me but the team. If you see the game, playing first base, I didn't throw the ball to the right spot because I didn't feel the finger. It was the right decision at the right time."

Abreu entered the contest with a .277/.337/.480 slash line with eight home runs and 29 RBIs in 45 games.
