Report: Marlins reassign Brett Butler, name Lenny Harris as 3rd-base coach

Less than two weeks after replacing manager Mike Redmond with a front-office executive, the Miami Marlins made another tweak to their major-league coaching staff Monday afternoon.

Lenny Harris will reportedly take over as third-base coach for the Marlins, while Brett Butler - who has held the position since October of 2013 - will now serve as the club's outfield instructor and baserunning coach, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. An earlier report from Rosenthal indicated that Butler's tenure as third-base coach ended Monday after the 57-year-old tendered his resignation.

It appears, however, as though the Marlins were compelled to make a change amid confusion over signs in recent games. The apparent disarray within the organization hasn't really relented since the decision to appoint general manager Dan Jennings as field manager earlier this month, a move that has drawn plenty of criticism around the league.

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale, for instance, expressed some measure of disapproval over the Marlins' decision to hand managerial responsibility to someone with negligible on-field experience.

"I think it's frustrating in a way for guys who've done it," Hale told ESPN's Jim Bowden. "I've said this before: When you finish playing or get into Major League Baseball on the minor-league level, you say, 'OK, what do I want to do? OK, I want to manage in the big leagues. What do I have to do? I'm going to bust my hump coaching and teaching and become the best manager at the minor-league level that I can, then get to the big leagues.' It's not looking like that track is going to be the way anymore."

Buck Showalter, meanwhile, took a thinly-veiled jab at Jennings' bullpen management during the Marlins' weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles.

"They used what, three guys three days in a row out of the bullpen to get it done? We'll see how that works down the road," quipped Showalter.
