Blue Jays' Navarro to begin rehab assignment Tuesday

Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

Toronto Blue Jays slugger Dioner Navarro is nearing a return to the majors following a hamstring injury that's sidelined the 31-year-old for more than a month.

Navarro will travel to the team's Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo on Tuesday for a rehab assignment before rejoining the big league club.

Used primarily as the team's designated hitter this season, Navarro suffered a strained hamstring while running the bases on April 21 and has been sidelined since.

Jose Bautista has been limited to DH duties for the past month since suffering a strained right shoulder, so it will be interesting to see where Navarro fits in once he's eligible to return.

In the eight games prior to injury, Navarro was hitting .267/.294/.333 with a pair of doubles.
