(SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees hope there are some runs left in the tank on Tuesday when they continue their three-game series with the Kansas City Royals at Yankee Stadium.

New York came into Monday's opener riding a six-game losing streak and hitting an MLB-worst .198 during the day. However, you would never have known it, as Chase Headley, Brian McCann and Brett Gardner all homered during an eight-run first inning that set the tone for the Yankees' 14-1 rout.

Headley started the barrage with a two-run homer and McCann and Gardner tacked on three-run shots later in the frame. Stephen Drew added a three-run dinger of his own in the second, while rookie Slade Heathcott later belted his first major league homer to put the finishing touches on only the Yankees' second win in 12 outings.

"Anything over the plate, they were hitting," Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer said of the Yankees. "They came ready to play."

Four of the blasts were served up by Jeremy Guthrie (4-3), who was walloped for 11 runs and nine hits before being lifted with none out in the second inning.

Nathan Eovaldi (4-1) did his part as well to help New York end its six-game skid, scattering eight hits and permitting just one run over seven sharp innings.

Jarred Dyson knocked in Kansas City's lone run on a 2-for-2 day at the plate.

Heading to the hill for the Royals on Tuesday will be lefty Jason Vargas, who hasn't pitched since beating Cleveland back on May 5.

Vargas has been sidelined with a flexor strain in his left elbow, but will get the call in place of Danny Duffy, who was put on the disabled list Monday with left shoulder inflammation.

Vargas is 3-1 on the year with a 5.26 ERA, but is 0-4 in eight games (7 starts) versus the Yankees with a 6.75 ERA.

New York, meanwhile, turns to righty Adam Warren, who is 2-3 with a 4.26 ERA. Warren lost to Washington on Wednesday, as he allowed three runs (2 earned) and four hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Warren has never started a game against the Royals, but has faced them three times out of the bullpen and has pitched to a 1.35 ERA over 6 2/3 innings without getting a decision.

Kansas City took two of three from the Yanks earlier this month.
