(SportsNetwork.com) - The Toronto Blue Jays won the opener of their three-game series with the Chicago White Sox thanks to a shutout by Drew Hutchison. Now they will try to win the set on Tuesday night behind R.A. Dickey, who snapped a two-start losing streak last time out with a complete-game victory.
Dickey had yielded 13 runs and 17 hits over his back-to-back losses and still was charged with four runs on Thursday versus the Los Angeles Angels. Those came on five hits and two walks, but he was able to go the distance for the 14th time in his career and strike out a season-high seven.
"I had a lot of late movement tonight, something I haven't had for probably the last month," Dickey said.
The 40-year-old righty also gave up two homers for a third straight start, but nonetheless improved to 2-5 on the year with a 5.49 earned run average.
The knuckleballer is 2-4 with an unsightly 8.10 ERA in nine career meetings with the White Sox, including five starts.
Hutchison, meanwhile, limited the White Sox to four hits over his second career shutout. He fanned eight and did not walk a batter while needing 96 pitches to wrap up the win.
"He had them swinging, he was hitting the zone and I don't know if he even broke a sweat tonight," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of Hutchison. "That's one of those games where it's nice to sit back and watch because he was in total control."
Justin Smoak keyed the offense with three RBI, including a two-run homer, while Chris Colabello knocked in a pair of runs during a four-run first inning. Josh Donaldson added a solo homer and scored three times.
Toronto won two straight for the first time since a three-game run from May 6-9 and is 4-4 on a 10-game homestand.
While Jose Bautista missed a second straight game due to a nagging shoulder injury, Jose Reyes went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in his return to the lineup. Reyes was placed on the disabled list on April 28 due to a fractured left rib.
Bautista, meanwhile, could return to the lineup tonight as the designated hitter.
Chicago has lost six of its last seven overall and had a five-game road winning streak snapped in the start of an 11-game swing. The club also saw outfielder Avisail Garcia exit in the second inning due to a sore right knee that has him day-to-day.
Hector Noesi made his first start since May 9 and allowed five runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks over seven innings. The right-hander had lost his first three starts before being moved to the bullpen.
"Right now, the offense isn't clicking at all," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "They know it and it has to change or you are going to lose games."
John Danks will get the start for the White Sox looking to improve upon his 2-4 mark and 5.11 ERA this season.
Danks was aiming for a second straight win on Thursday versus Cleveland, but instead yielded five runs over 5 1/3 innings. He was touched for six hits and four walks, yielding back-to-back homers in the 5-2 setback.
The 30-year-old southpaw is 2-4 with a 5.70 ERA in eight career starts against the Blue Jays.
Chicago was 5-2 versus the Blue Jays last season.
