National League Game Summary - Washington at Chicago

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - In a matchup of two of baseball's young stars, Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals took the first meeting of a three-game set against Kris Bryant's Chicago Cubs.

Denard Span and Wilson Ramos each hit solo homers to help the Nationals to a 2-1 win on Monday at Wrigley Field.

Bryant did all he could for the Cubs, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run in the setback.

Tanner Roark (1-2), making his first start of 2015, recorded the win with his lone blemish coming on Bryant's solo shot in the first inning. Roark went five innings and scattered three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

"I had to go out there and try to do my job whether it's in the bullpen or starting," Roark said.

Drew Storen came on in the ninth and polished off four scoreless innings from the Nationals bullpen for his 15th save of the season.

Washington has won eight of its last nine.

Justin Grimm (1-1) absorbed the loss out of the bullpen for Chicago, with starter Tsuyoshi Wada going 5 1/3 innings and striking out six.

"Both sides pitched really, really well today," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said.

Each team scored a run in the first inning, with Span opening the scoring with his fourth homer of the season and Bryant cracking his sixth long ball in the home half.

Harper doubled with one out in the fourth and Ryan Zimmerman followed with a walk, but the Nationals could not cash in. Ramos popped out, then Danny Espinosa walked to load the bases prior to Wada working out of the jam with a strikeout of Michael Taylor.

Ramos launched a solo shot to right center in the sixth off Grimm to give Washington the lead for good.
