The Cubs returned Varvaro to the Red Sox on Sunday after he was diagnosed with a torn right flexor tendon in his elbow. The Red Sox placed Varvaro on the 15-day DL.

Analysis:

According to the Staten Island Advance, Varvaro will undergo surgery Tuesday to address the tear in his pitching arm, ending his season and voiding the Cubs' waiver claim of the right-hander back on May 3. He never logged an official appearance with the Cubs or any of their affiliates, so both teams concluded it would be appropriate to return the pitcher to Boston. The reliever is expected to require six months of rehabilitation after having surgery, putting him on track to resume throwing in November.
