Marlins place Latos, Alvarez on 15-day DL after suffering 8th straight loss

Adam Hunger / USA TODAY Sports

Nothing is going right for the Miami Marlins.

Starting pitchers Mat Latos and Henderson Alvarez are heading to the disabled list, manager Dan Jennings revealed after the team suffered an eighth straight loss Friday night.

Alvarez experienced discomfort in his throwing shoulder in the sixth inning of the 8-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, while Latos will be sidelined with a knee injury.

Both starters are off to nightmarish starts. Latos is 1-4 with a lofty 6.12 ERA in nine starts while Alvarez is 0-4 with a 6.45 ERA in four outings.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported earlier on Friday that Alvarez has been pitching with a 90 percent tear in his UCL for years.

The pair of injuries will leave the rotation dangerously shorthanded as staff ace Jose Fernandez is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery and right-hander Jarred Cosart is on the DL with vertigo.
