American League Game Summary - LA Angels of Anaheim at Boston

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Iannetta and Erick Aybar both homered in a nine-run fifth inning that propelled the Angels to a 12-5 decision over Boston in the opener of a three-game series at Fenway Park.

David Freese drove in two and scored twice for the Angels, who were coming off a series split at Toronto. Albert Pujols hit a solo shot, while Marc Krauss, Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun added an RBI each.

Garrett Richards (4-2) was fortunate his offense perked up, as he allowed five runs on nine hits in six-plus frames for the win.

"We've been struggling in the batter's box, much like Boston has," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We just kept working good at-bats."

Brock Holt finished with two hits and drove in two runs and Mike Napoli added a solo homer for the Red Sox, losers of three straight and five of seven.

Rick Porcello (4-3) was tagged for seven runs and as many hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 4 1/3 frames.

Johnny Giavotella and Aybar each walked to begin the fifth, then the former scored on a Trout hit compounded by an Xander Bogaerts throwing error. Trout took second on the throw and stole third before scoring on a Calhoun single for a 5-3 game.

Freese doubled in Calhoun and Matt Barnes was summoned only to walk Matt Joyce and give up a three-run blast to Iannetta. Rusney Castillo's error on a Krauss fly allowed him to gain second, then after Giavotella flied out, Aybar wrapped a two-run homer around the Pesky Pole in right to make it 11-3.

Richards was pulled in the bottom of the seventh after loading the bases with none out and seeing a Freese error on a Mookie Betts grounder score one run and an infield hit from Dustin Pedroia bring home another. David Ortiz struck out and Daniel Nava grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Pujols doubled in the eighth and eventually scored the game's final run on a Freese fly to right.

"There's not a day I show up expecting to lose. I've never done that in my life and neither have the other 24 guys," Pedroia said. "We're playing hard. We're just not playing very good. I wish I had a magic word. It's baseball. You can't flip a switch."

Napoli's second-inning blast to left put the hosts on the board, and Pujols equalized for the visitors to start off the fourth.

The Halos loaded the bases with one out later in the frame on a pair of singles and a walk, then went ahead on a fielder's choice grounder from Krauss. Joyce, however, was erased at home on a double steal to end the inning.

In the home half, Holt plated a pair with a double for a 3-2 Boston lead.
