National League Game Summary - Chicago at San Diego

San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Hendricks tossed the first shutout of his career as the Chicago Cubs grabbed a 3-0 win over the San Diego Padres to close out a three-game series.

Hendricks (1-1) gave up just five hits and struck out seven in what was also the first complete game of his career. He needed 108 pitches to finish the game, 71 of which went for strikes.

"When you pitch like that, you'll win a lot of baseball games," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "(Hendricks) was in command of himself, in command of the game. It was really fun to watch."

Kris Bryant hit a two-run home run and Addison Russell added a solo shot for the Cubs, who have won their last two.

Odrisamer Despaigne (2-3) gave up two runs on six hits over six innings for the Padres, who have lost five of six. Will Middlebrooks had two hits.

"We can't hang our heads," Middlebrooks said.

Chicago got all the runs it needed in the first as Dexter Fowler led off with a walk and Bryant followed with his fifth home run of the season.

Russell went deep to lead off the seventh for his third of the year and a 3-0 advantage for the Cubs.

Hendricks, meanwhile, didn't get into a single jam as he only allowed one runner to reach second base.

With two outs in the fourth, Justin Upton singled and quickly stole second, but Hendricks got Yangervis Solarte to fly out and end the frame.

Hendricks set the Padres down in order in the ninth to finish off the game.
