Cardinals walk-off Pirates for 3rd straight time

Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

It's one thing to lose to your division rivals. It's another to repeatedly do so in painstaking fashion.

Matt Carpenter's sacrifice fly in the 11th inning lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to their fifth straight victory and second walk-off win in as many games with a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Busch Stadium on Saturday.

It marked the Cardinals' third consecutive walk-off victory over the Pirates, dating back to a 1-0 win in St. Louis last September.

The Cardinals' win spoiled a strong outing from Pirates left-hander Francisco Liriano, who threw five hitless innings before Peter Bourjos led off the sixth with a single.

Liriano exited after throwing eight innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits, three walks and striking out four.

The Cardinals won Friday's series opener in the final at-bat of the game when Matt Adams hit a bases-loaded single with two outs in the 10th inning for the 2-1 edge.
