Royals' combined no-hitter broken up in 8th inning

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

Detroit Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos broke up a combined no-hitter by Kansas City Royals pitchers Friday with a single to left off reliever Kelvin Herrera in the eighth inning.

Veteran starter Chris Young completed five frames without allowing a hit before getting pulled after 51 strikes and 81 pitches. He walked three, struck out nine and exited staked to a 4-0 lead.

Royals right-hander Ryan Madson relieved Young and fired two hitless innings to keep the shot at history intact before Castellanos' single fell for the first of four Tigers hits.

"For me, that's the story of the night - five great innings from Chris Young, picking us up, and not giving up any hits," manager Ned Yost told reporters after the 4-1 win. "He lost it a little bit in the fourth, but he picked it right back up."

The Royals improved to 16-7 and extended their division lead over Detroit to 1 1/2 games.
