Cardinals' Wainwright out for season with torn Achilles in left foot

The St. Louis Cardinals received the bad news that they were expecting.

General manager John Mozeliak confirmed Monday that right-hander Adam Wainwright will miss the remainder of the season after an MRI revealed a torn Achilles in his left foot.

"As far as this year goes, he's done," Mozeliak told reporters

The three-time All-Star is expected to undergo surgery this week and will likely be sidelined anywhere between nine and 12 months.

Wainwright departed Sunday's game in the fifth inning after suffering the injury while hitting. He popped up a pitch and immediately began limping out of the batters box before requiring assistance to make it off the field.

Mozeliak remained optimistic when speaking Sunday about what a potential loss of their ace would mean and how he doesn't believe it will derail their season.

"Clearly in a competitive business like baseball, when things like this happen, the last thing you can do is feel sorry for yourself," Mozeliak said.

"I think we can absorb this but it's always difficult to replace your best pitcher."

Wainwright has finished within the top-three in NL Cy Young voting on four separate occasions and twice in the last two seasons. Since 2013, the 10-year veteran has gone 41-19 with a 2.61 ERA and 1.05 WHIP.
