Yankees' Teixeira, Marlins' Hechavarria earn player of the week honors

Mark Teixeira's unexpected power surge earned the 35-year-old first baseman the American League's Player of the Week award Monday afternoon following an impressive display both on the road and in the Bronx.

Despite battling ceaseless injury problems over the previous three seasons, Teixeira very much resembled last week the player who once ranked among the most feared hitters in the game. Teixeira managed a 1.429 OPS in seven games this past week, helping his club earn series victories over both the Detroit Tigers and New York Mets by launching five home runs in 24 at-bats.

Teixeira made a particularly notable contribution in Friday's 6-1 victory over the Mets, when he clobbered a pair of home runs off Jacob deGrom, the reigning National League Rookie of the Year.

Adeiny Hechavarria, meanwhile, earned Player of the Week honors in the National League after going 12-for-24 (.500) with three extra-base hits and one stolen base to help the Marlins tally five wins in their last six contests. Hechavarria trails only Dee Gordon for the team lead in wins above replacement following his impressive week, which also featured some dazzling defensive displays at shortstop.
