Dodgers' Puig lands on DL for 1st time in career; Peralta sidelined with dead arm
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig is headed for the disabled list for the first time in his career.
Puig, who was held out of Sunday's lineup for the second straight game and has now missed six of the last 11 due to a strained hamstring, was placed on the DL prior to Sunday's series finale against the San Diego Padres.
Puig's ailing left hamstring forced him off the field for four of the Dodgers' five games last week before he returned for Friday's opener in San Diego. He exited the contest in the sixth inning when he aggravated the injury trying to beat out a ground ball.
Manager Don Mattingly believes Puig could be well enough to play in four or five days, but said the club opted to exercise caution with its All-Star right fielder.
"At this point, get the thing right," Mattingly told reporters. "Make sure we have him for the long run."
The Dodgers also sent temporary closer Joel Peralta to the DL after the reliever complained of dead arm in his right shoulder.
Peralta, who has yet to allow a run this season and is a perfect 3-for-3 in save opportunities, struggled with his velocity this week, topping out at 84 mph on Thursday and prompting Mattingly to say the team had concerns with the way he pitched. Peralta said he lacks shoulder strength, but insisted he's not experiencing any pain.
The Dodgers called up pitchers Scott Baker and Carlos Frias from Triple-A Oklahoma City in a pair of corresponding roster moves.
