Mariners place Iwakuma on 15-day DL with right lat strain

Joe Nicholson / USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Mariners have placed right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma on the 15-day disabled list with a right lat strain, and have recalled left-hander Lucas Luetge from Triple-A Tacoma.

Iwakuma, who was scheduled to pitch Sunday, had gone 0-1 with an ugly 6.61 ERA in his first three starts, and delivered only 71 pitches in his last appearance. His dip in velocity over the three outings is becoming an increasing concern for the Mariners and general manager Jack Zduriencik.

Manager Lloyd McClendon has yet to name a replacement starter for Sunday's clash with the Minnesota Twins.

The 33-year-old went 15-9 with a 3.52 ERA in 28 starts last season, and was named an All-Star in 2013.
