Mets' Parnell shut down for a week amid forearm soreness

Steve Mitchell / USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets opted Friday to shut down reliever Bobby Parnell for a week due to forearm soreness, roughly three days after the 30-year-old labored through an ugly rehab outing with High-A St. Lucie, reports MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.

Parnell, who hasn't taken the mound for the Mets since undergoing Tommy John surgery roughly 12 months ago, began his rehabilitation assignment earlier this month, appearing in three games for St. Lucie before being shut down. Amid renewed soreness, however, it remains unclear when he'll be able to rejoin the Mets.

Parnell's eventual role with the Mets remains equally nebulous, as the former ninth-round pick logged just one appearance in the majors since the end of 2013. Though Parnell logged 22 saves for the Mets two seasons ago, Jeurys Familia has thrived since assuming ninth-inning duties earlier this month, notching eight saves in as many opportunities.
