Alcides Escobar to return to Royals' lineup Monday

Kansas City Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar will return to the lineup for Monday's series opener against the Minnesota Twins, roughly 72 hours after he suffered a knee injury during a contentious collision with Brett Lawrie of the Oakland Athletics.

Lawrie insisted he apologized after his takeout slide incapacitated Escobar in the seventh inning of Friday's clash in Kansas City, but the fiery third baseman's antics still prompted a weekend of hostility between the Royals and Athletics.

"There was zero intent," Lawrie said of hurting Escobar. "I was just going in hard trying to break up double play."

Escobar missed the final two games of his club's acrimonious series with Oakland due to a mild knee strain, but the 28-year-old is slated to return to the leadoff spot Monday at Kauffman Stadium, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.

Through 10 games this season, Escobar is hitting .326/.348/.395 (105 OPS+) with three doubles and one stolen base.
