Garcia agrees with Dodgers, who plan to release McGowan

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Pitcher Freddy Garcia has agreed to a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who agreed to pay reliever Mike Adams a $100,000 retention bonus and told pitcher Dustin McGowan that they plan to release him

Garcia, a 38-year-old right-hander, was 4-7 with a 4.37 ERA for Baltimore and Atlanta in 13 starts and four relief appearances in 2013. After the Braves released him late in spring training last year, the two-time All-Star played for the EDA Rhinos in Taiwan.

''Obviously, we're building starter depth,'' Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Tuesday.

Adams, who agreed to a minor league contract on March 1, was assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City. An inflamed rotator cuff limited him 22 appearances with Philadelphia last year.

''It's a little disappointing,'' he said. ''They said they didn't want to rush me. I understand. Hopefully, it's something that won't take long.''

McGowan, 32, was 5-3 with a 4.17 ERA in eight starts and 43 relief appearances for Toronto last year. The right-hander signed a one-year deal with the Dodgers on Feb. 23 at the major league minimum $507,500 would have been owed a $1 million bonus if he had one day of active major league service with Los Angeles this year.

''We all like what we saw in him, but it just didn't happen fast enough,'' Mattingly said.
