Nationals' Rendon has MCL examined by Dr. Andrews; team waiting for results

The Washington Nationals are hoping for the best and bracing for the worst after star third baseman Anthony Rendon visited Dr. James Andrews on Monday for a second opinion on his ailing left knee.

Rendon, who was diagnosed with a sprained MCL earlier this month, sought the opinion of Dr. Andrews after an MRI showed little improvement since he suffered the injury diving for a ball March 9.

"Right now, we're looking at what Dr. Andrews sees and (taking) the appropriate steps necessary," general manager Mike Rizzo told reporters Monday afternoon. "But I have no results at this point, so to speculate what that would be would be inaccurate. We'll see what that is. We'll get the report on what his findings are and go from there."

The latest development is particularly concerning given Dr. Andrews' experience with Tommy John surgery on pitchers' torn elbow ligaments. There's been no indication, though, that Rendon's visit to the noted surgeon was triggered by worst-case fears.

Rendon's stalled recovery does, however, cast increasing doubt over his status for Opening Day. It's more likely than not at this point that the 24-year-old will begin the season on the disabled list.

"We'll see what the doc says, and we'll take it from there," Rizzo said. "Let's see if it's a concern when we hear back from the doctor."
