Cubs release Felix Doubront

Dennis Wierzbick / USA TODAY Sports

Felix Doubront's time with the Chicago Cubs failed to last a full season as the team opted to release the left-hander on Saturday.

Acquired from the Boston Red Sox during last season's non-waiver trade deadline, Doubront proceeded to go 2-1 with a 3.98 ERA across four starts.

The 27-year-old was expected to compete for the final spot in the Cubs' rotation but allowed nine runs off 17 hits in seven innings this spring.

Chicago is required to pay him approximately $473,000 of the $1.925 million he was owed.
