Tigers manager sticking with Nathan despite struggles

Despite his ineffectiveness, Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus continues to show an unwavering confidence in closer Joe Nathan.

On the heels of a career-worst season, the right-hander owns a 5.79 ERA and 1.50 WHIP through 10 appearances this spring, though his job appears safe.

"It's just that the answer is no," Ausmus told James Schmeho of Michigan Live, when asked if Nathan will lose the closer's job.

Nathan proclaimed in January that he has added motivation this season to prove that his career isn't finished. He said he spent the offseason getting stronger, however, that work seems to have been all for not if the early indications from spring carry into the season.

Should Ausmus eventually admit defeat if Nathan continues to struggle, he appears to have a solid replacement in Joakim Soria. The two-time All-Star has allowed just one hit across seven innings this spring and prefers the closer's role.

"I'm not excited about (not being a closer), but being a setup man is not that different," Soria said. "I love this game and I love it anywhere I pitch."

With the Tigers' window to win closing quickly, Nathan's leash could be growing increasingly shorter.
