Analysis:

Bergman was largely viewed as an afterthought in the competition heading into the spring due to the glut of pitchers ahead of him on the depth chart, but the release of Jhoulys Chacin and a groin injury that will sideline Jorge De La Rosa for the beginning of the year have since thinned the ranks. Though two of Bergman's competitors, top prospects Eddie Butler and Jon Gray, have been stellar in Cactus League play this spring, it's believed that the Rockies would prefer to have one or both open the season at Triple-A Albuquerque to receive further seasoning. With that in mind, there's plenty of opportunity here for Bergman -- who has given up three runs on 10 hits and four walks over 11.2 innings this season -- to claim a starting role right away for the Rockies. The 26-year-old is lauded for his ability to find the strike zone, but it often came at the cost of him yielding hard contact during his 10 starts with the Rockies last season, as he posted a 5.93 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over that span. Even in NL-only formats, Bergman will carry little intrigue if he ends up opening the season with the big club.
