Lohse goes 5 innings in Brewers' 12-2 win over Texas

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) Kyle Lohse yielded one run in five innings, Luis Sardinas went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and the Brewers crushed a Texas Rangers split squad 12-2 Saturday.

Lohse, who has been named Milwaukee's opening day starter, retired nine in a row during one stretch and struck out five, throwing 51 strikes in 75 pitches.

''It's good to have an outing like that and get good results,'' Lohse said. ''It might not have looked much like it, but I wasn't as sharp, but I'd come back and make some good pitches. That's what we do. I felt as good in the last inning as I did in the first.''

Sardinas, whom the Rangers traded to the Brewers in January, entered the game with three hits and no RBIs. Sardinas drove in a pair of runs with a second-inning single and raised his average to .241.

Rangers starter Colby Lewis allowed three runs on eight hits in five innings, working out of a bases-loaded, one-out mess in the fourth.

''It felt like I had to grind,'' Lewis said. ''My stuff was actually pretty decent. I felt like I checked in for work. I worked myself out of some jams. After the first couple of innings, I felt like I was able to keep the ball down a little bit better and my control kind of set in and I was able to put up some zeroes in some tough spots.''

The Brewers scored six runs in the sixth off Jamey Wright, who failed to retire any of the seven hitters he faced and gave up five hits and two walks.

SCHEPPERS DEBUTS

RHP Tanner Scheppers, the Rangers' 2014 opening day starter who's returning to the bullpen this season, pitched for the first time since rolling his ankle on March 8. He gave up two hits in a scoreless ninth.

A MINOR MOVE

RHP Wily Peralta, who topped the Brewers with 17 victories last season, will pitch in a minor league game Monday instead of facing the Rockies. Colorado opens the season with three games in Milwaukee, so the Brewers prefer not to have Peralta face the Rockies so close to the start of the regular season.

STARTING TIME

Brewers: Lohse said he would have two more March starts before the April 6 opener. ''The finish line, you kind of see it,'' Lohse said. ''It's still not close enough to start packing up yet.''

Rangers: Lewis hiked his pitch count to 75. ''I felt like I could have gone back out,'' Lewis said of the sixth. ''After three runs in two innings, I really had to lock it down.''

TRAINER'S ROOM

Brewers: RHP Jim Henderson, who had shoulder surgery on Aug. 19, has not regained his usual velocity yet, barely touching 90 and working mostly at 87-89 mph. Henderson, who saved 28 games in 2013, will pitch in minor league games for the next several days in an attempt to regain strength.

Rangers: OF Shin-Soo Choo has left triceps tightness and will be limited to DH duties for a few days. ''He is an extremely important player to us, so we're going to monitor him,'' assistant general manager Thad Levine said. ''He should be able to DH soon and be back in right field in plenty of time to get ready for the regular season.'' ... Non-roster invitee RHP Juan Carlos Oviedo, who logged 92 saves from 2009-11 with the Marlins, has right biceps tendinitis. Oviedo sat out 2013 after 2012 elbow surgery and threw just 31 2-3 innings last season for the Rays. ... RHP Ross Ohlendorf threw a bullpen session Saturday for the first time since straining a groin March 15.

UP NEXT

Brewers: RHP Francisco Rodriguez, who re-signed with Milwaukee on March 14, will make his first Cactus League appearance Sunday against the White Sox.

Rangers: RHP Yovani Gallardo will start Sunday against the Mariners.
