Report: Vogelsong signed with Giants after Astros lowered offer

Adam Hunger / USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Astros reportedly changed their contract offer for free-agent pitcher Ryan Vogelsong after reviewing the results of his medical examination, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Houston is believed to have initially offered Vogelsong the same $4 million he eventually signed for to return to the San Francisco Giants, but sources tell Heyman the Astros lowered that figure after the veteran right-hander completed his physical in Houston.

Vogelsong's agent, Dave Meier, declined to comment on the report to CBS Sports, but the pitcher had this to say after finalizing his deal with the Giants:

"I really wasn't comfortable with what was going on," he said. "Ultimately, I made a decision to come back with the Giants and I'm really just happy to be back and how things worked out.… Some things happened that I just wasn't comfortable with, and negotiations broke down from there. Once that happened it was time to move on."

He later told a pair of radio hosts that they wouldn't believe him if he revealed what happened during the offseason.

Vogelsong underwent Tommy John surgery in 2001, but has maintained a relatively clean bill of health since. He was slowed by reoccurring back problems during the 2012 season and missed most of 2013 after fracturing his finger from getting hit by a pitch.

The 37-year-old had one of his finest seasons to date last year, posting the second-most innings, strikeouts and K/9 rate of his career. He started three games for the Giants during their World Series run.
