After re-signing with the San Francisco Giants this winter Jake Peavy is poised to pitch in the same rotation as Matt Cain for the first time, a reality that has the 33-year-old right-hander brimming with excitement.

"Oh, it's going to be a lot of fun to be in the same rotation with Matt Cain," Peavy told Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News after making his spring debut Wednesday. "I can't wait to work with him and learn from him."

Peavy kept the Giants afloat during the second half of 2014 when Cain was sidelined by an elbow injury, crafting a sterling 2.17 ERA over a dozen starts down the stretch. Cain, a three-time All-Star who was limited to just 15 starts last season, expressed a mutual admiration for his 33-year-old teammate who claimed the NL Cy Young award in 2007.

"He throws with such a competitive edge," Cain said. "It was sad for me that I wasn't there to throw before him or after him. He just has that fire in him. That's what you need in a rotation, for guys to push each other. We had that in the past, and I think that's a big reason why we've been successful."

Peavy and Cain will join left-hander Madison Bumgarner as well as right-handers Tim Hudson and Tim Lincecum in a slightly modified version of the rotation that helped the Giants to a World Series championship in October.
